CHAPTER

TWELVE

MONROE

Lila caught me off guard asking me to go to the fair with them today to surprise Cara. It cut things a bit close since we had a video to make but we pulled it off. It presented a good opportunity for us to play boyfriend and girlfriend for Cara’s sake.

Well, my sake too because I don’t want her to quit. We’re doing even better than I thought financially, but also, being with Cara and her friends has been fun. She’s enjoying herself too even if she can’t admit it yet. She’s trying to keep that wall up and her attitude in place, but I see the cracks forming.

Especially today when she actually relaxed and had fun. Maybe it’s the relief of having a little money in the bank and plans in place to make more, or maybe it’s the plethora of orgasms she won’t admit to having. Either way, she’s more pleasant to be around.

Her smart ass attitude is a turn on when it isn’t accompanied by vandalism of my trailer or trying to get revenge. It makes me want to drag her into my bedroom and fuck her until she screams for mercy.

It’s starting to get dark as we walk to the car to drop our stuff off before the concert. It’s not my usual type of music but Cara and Lila are bursting with excitement.

“Hey, look!” Cara calls, on our way back. She rushes over to a booth where a crowd of people have gathered. The rest of us follow. “It’s the drawing for Coffin Days at Scarefest next month! First prize is a new car!”

Scarefest is a harvest festival and Halloween celebration held in mid-October. It’s held in a different small town each year in our state, and it looks like it’s our turn.

Lila hangs back with me while Maren and Cara wait in line to buy tickets. “Not interested in winning a new car?” I ask.

“Not when it includes staying in a coffin for days while they drop lizards and stuff on you. Hard pass.”

Coffin days is a weird contest for sure. The end of it usually gets shown on local tv along with highlights. People compete to see who can stay in the coffin the longest—minus preplanned restroom breaks—to win prizes.

They come rushing back, raffle tickets in hand. “They’re doing it differently this year. There will be eight participants, but they only pick four people. Those people choose a friend to compete against them and share the coffin,” Maren announces.

“We have to wait here. They’re announcing the participants in a few minutes. We got here just in time,” Cara gushes.

Lila regards Maren. “You have a good car. Why would you want to lie in worms or be trapped in a box?”

“Second place is a vacation for four to Daytona Beach.”

“Oh, I stand corrected,” Lila says, shaking her head.

“If either of us gets picked, we’ll take the other one,” Cara explains, and Maren agrees with an enthusiastic nod.

The crowd grows until finally a guy steps up on a small platform with a microphone.
